Peopletrail began operation in 1994 under the name Consumer Credentials. When Equifax purchased the credit reporting portfolio of Consumer Credentials, Peopletrail was created as a stand-alone employment criminal background screening company. Peopletrail quickly rebuilt a credit reporting portfolio and began offering drug testing solutions soon after its inception in 2005.

Peopletrail is very responsive to concerns about errors or omissions in its reports. They also provide the means to notate any items that the candidate feels need further explanation. 

The cost for the background check is $295. Fees for providing a verified report to interested parties of the candidates choosing are additional.

Peopletrail screens both private and public databases to check for records that match the candidate’s full name, birth date, and address history. This process isn’t instantaneous as you might expect, and it often requires a manual check of public government records. Peopletrail has access to official records that other consumers facing background checks do not.
